Accountability Coaching: Becoming the Iron Fist in the Velvet Glove

Jul 11 / Shane Pearson

A Coach With an Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove.

Imagine being held accountable by a coach with an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Imagine you made a commitment to your coach that you will take certain actions and you asked them for help with accountability, to make sure you follow through.

But right now you have a dilemma because now you are in that moment of choice, that moment of decision between doing it or not doing it.

The Moment of Decision

You know that right now it is time to take action, but…..

  • It does not feel comfortable.
  • You don’t want to do it.
  • Resistance is high.
  • The temptation to not do it is high.
  • You think ‘let’s just leave it for now’

But you know when you meet your coach again, you know that they will stick to their end of the agreement and hold you accountable to your commitments.

They will check in to see if you got it done, or not. They always do!

So it is not going to be overlooked, or ignored.

Darn! You won’t get away with it that easy.

You think of good excuses you can use and what you can tell your coach that got in the way.

There are, of course, perfectly valid reasons why you couldn’t do it; this happened, that didn’t go to plan, someone was late, something ran over…. There are always stories we can make up and tell ourselves, and others.

But deep inside you know they are nothing more than excuses.

You also know that when you meet your coach again they will help you explore what got in the way of you being successful, and they don’t settle for excuses.

The Firm, Gentle Grip That Holds to Commitment

You know that gentle, yet firm grip they will hold on the commitment you made to yourself, for yourself. Like an iron fist in a velvet glove you know that they will hold you to your word. They will take the commitment you made to yourself very seriously, even if you don’t!

They will examine whatever it was that prevented you from following through on your commitment.

"How did you let that get in the way of you being successful?"

That iron fist will gently and steadily hold your words under the warm light of non-judgement and examine it until the truth is coaxed to the surface. Until you see the truth you were trying to keep from yourself.

They won’t let you continue to deceive yourself, if that is preventing you from reaching the goals and transformations you desire. They want more for you, and know that you do too!

Now back in the moment of choice between doing and not doing, you take action.

Why?

Because you have now become your own iron fist in the velvet glove. You have not let yourself off the hook, and already you feel your power return and a newfound sense of resilience building. You are growing and you are grateful.
